Tips For Caring For Your Dentures

Tooth loss is a serious dental condition. One of the solutions that dentists offer for tooth loss is installation of dentures. Dentures are convenient and comfortable for patients that have suffered tooth loss either as a result of an accident or a disease. It is imperative for you to apply proper dental care for your dentures to remain comfortable and last long. There are several things that you can do to ensure that you maintain oral health even when you have dentures. Some of the things that you can do include:

·       Exercise regular dental hygiene – Dentures are just like your regular teeth. They need to be brushed daily to get rid of food and plaque. This will prevent the dentures from getting permanent stains that will require special cleaning. It is advisable to use a brush with soft bristles to clean the dentures. There is a special brush that is specifically designed for cleaning dentures.  You can use different household soaps to clean the dentures. However, the soaps that you use should be mild and not harsh like household bleach. There is a special dentures cleaner that can also be used.

·       Care when dentures are not in use - Your dentures need to be moist when they are not in use. This ensures that they do not dry or lose their shape. Therefore, it is advisable when you are not using these dentures to place them in a soaking solution that is specifically designed for dentures. You should be careful however if your dentures have metal attachments. The attachments can be tarnished when you soak them in soaking solution.  For this particular type of denture, you need to talk to your dentist about the type of solution that you should use. Avoid putting the dentures in hot water because they will warp.

·       See your dentist regularly- it is advisable to see your dentist regularly to check whether you are wearing the dentures properly.  When you do not wear dentures appropriately, you expose yourself to gum sensitivity and sores. The dentures also need to be regularly cleaned by your dentist and examined.  If you wear upper and lower denture, you should see a dentist at least once a year for any signs of infection or even oral cancer. Your dentist will also give you tips on cleaning your dentures and fitting them properly.

Dentures are an excellent solution for teeth loss and taking care of them should be a priority at all times.
