Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last four teeth to erupt in adulthood and are usually found at both ends of the lower and upper jaw. When for one reason or the other they do not fully emerge or do not emerge at all they are said to be impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth may not cause any problems but to others they cause serious dental issues.


A wisdom tooth can either be fully or partially impacted. A partially impacted wisdom tooth will erupt just to the surface, meaning the crown is the only visible part on the gum. A fully or partially impacted wisdom tooth can also grow bending towards the adjoining tooth or towards the back of the mouth. It can also grow ‘lying down’ i.e. at a right angle to the rest of the teeth.


  • Causes

Wisdom teeth may become impacted when there is not enough room in the mouth to erupt. The crowding may be caused by spaced out teeth in the mouth.


  • Symptoms

Although many people may not get problems when their wisdom teeth impact, others suffer a great deal of discomfort such as:


  • Swollen gums
  • Gums that are bleeding

  3. Limit sugars – In the office it is easy to rely on sugary foods to keep the energy up. However, you should limit the amount of sugary foods that you take while in the office as sugars are great for fueling the reproduction of bacteria. Substitute the sugary drinks and foods with fresh fruits and use safe sweeteners.
  4. Eat fruits and vegetables that clean teeth – Vegetables and fruits such as apples help to clean teeth as you bite into them. You should always have these foods at hand in the office. Options also include carrots and celery. You can eat this food last after a meal in order to help you keep your teeth clean.
  5. Limit use of teeth to eating – At work, you may have a shortage of tools that are readily available at home such as bottle openers. History of the Toothbrush

The toothbrush


A toothbrush is an instrument used for cleaning the teeth and gums. It consists of a cluster of bristles that are mounted onto one end of a handle. The handle is used for holding the toothbrush. The bristles clean the teeth and gums by brushing over them to remove plaque or food debris.


History of the toothbrush


The toothbrush is a common fixture in any home. It is essential for cleaning teeth and general oral hygiene. However, the toothbrush as we know it today was not always as it is. It has undergone development through the centuries.


3500 – 3000 BC


Tools for brushing teeth were first seen between 3500 – 3000 BC. The Egyptians and Babylonians used twigs by chewing their ends to fray them. These twigs have been discovered in the tombs of some ancient Egyptians alongside their owners.


1600 BC


The Chinese also developed chewing sticks similar to the twigs of the Babylonians and Egyptians. These twigs however, were from aromatic tree twigs. They therefore also contributed to freshening of breath.


15th Century


The modern toothbrush as we know it today begun to take shape in the 15th century. The Chinese developed a toothbrush using pig hair as the bristles. For the handle, a piece of bamboo or a bone was used. This design was later adapted in Europe when the toothbrush was brought to Europe. However, the Europeans used horse hair or feathers to replace the pig hair which was considered too hard.


1780 – 1850


The first modern toothbrush was designed in England by William Addis. He used a cattle bone for the handle and carved it into the shape that is so commonly seen in the modern toothbrush. He used swine hair for the brush bristles.


In later years, a toothbrush with three rows of bristles was introduced.




The invention of nylon by Du Pont resulted in the transition from natural fiber for the bristles of toothbrushes to nylon fiber bristles. Softer nylon fibers were introduced to toothbrushes. These were a hit with people.


In 1954, the first electric toothbrush was introduced. It was invented in Switzerland by Dr. Phillipe-Guy Woog. It was introduced to the US in 1960.




The toothbrush continues to undergo developments. Some of these include the introduction of chewable toothbrushes, 3-D printed toothbrushes and other individually tailored toothbrushes. History of Dentistry

Dentistry traces its roots way back to 7000 B.C. Evidence shows that in ancient times, dental treatments were carried out. From teeth examined from ancient remains, holes similar to those done by dental drills were seen. Other documented evidence of dentistry also show dental extractions, use of wires to treat broken jaws and loose teeth as well as treatment of gum diseases. This proves that dentistry was not started recently but is a concept that has been around way back in history.


Dental practices have indeed been part of civilization for thousands of years. It was not quite as refined as it is today and indeed it was a very bad time to have dental problems in ancient times. The conditions of dental practice were not hygienic and the process was definitely not pain free.   • Lack of information

Not much was known about dental problems including cavities and gum diseases. In fact at some point cavities were attributed to worms that ate the teeth. With this lack of information, people could not protect themselves from cavities and gum diseases as they did not know much about them.

Treatment methods though done with good intentions were primitive at best. As much as the dental practices long ago were primitive, the actions of the past contributed a lot to what is taking place today. This is because as years went by, dental treatments and practices were refined to the pain-free procedures they are today.
