  • Toothbrush carrier – Get a container or a bag specifically made for holding a toothbrush. This will ensure that your toothbrush is always hygienic for you to use. A toothbrush not in a holder may get contaminated therefore compromising your general health. You may get serious infections that will make your trip very unpleasant. You will be able to easily pack the toothbrush somewhere you can easily find it. You can get a small bag that will carry all your teeth cleaning items including toothpaste.
  • Toothpaste – Do not assume that you will be provided for with toothpaste wherever you are going. You can get travel size toothpaste that will not take up much space. This way even in an emergency event such as an unplanned stopover, you can have access to toothpaste. Carry enough toothpaste that will last for the duration of the trip. You can carry several travel size packs so that you know that you are covered.
  • Gum – This is handy for those moments you are unable to brush your teeth. You can use gum specifically made for such emergencies that cleans teeth effectively. It is also a great aid when you want to have fresh breath. Gum that is made using natural sweeteners is a good option as it is friendly for your dental health.


When you are travelling anything can happen to change your routine. However, always ensure that as much as possible you continue with a regimen that will protect your teeth. Being away does not mean that you ignore efforts to keep your teeth healthy.

  • Many cavities are going untreated.   • Statistics have shown that more than 51 million hours of school are lost annually as a result of dental issues. Children are forced to skip school in order to attend to urgent dental issues.
  • If you thought that the most common chronic childhood diseases were asthma, allergies or diabetes, you are wrong. The most common chronic illnesses in children in the US involve dental issues such as tooth decay. Tooth decay alone strikes 20 times more children than diabetes.
  • Sports are a major cause of dental injuries in children. According to Colgate, 39% of the dental injuries recorded in 2013 were as a result of sports related activities.
  • The use of dental sealants to protect the surfaces of children’s teeth has greatly reduced the occurrence of tooth decay. However, sealants are not a permanent solution. They wear away. The average life of sealants is anything between 5 and 10 years depending on the type of sealant. However, the CDC encourages the use of sealants in the prevention of decay.

Studies show that one in every four people suffers from dental phobia. This is a fear of visiting a dentist. There are many reasons why people fear the dentist. This may be because of bad experiences linked to a visit maybe during childhood. Dental procedures have not always been smooth. Statistics show that most people are afraid of going to the dentist. The idea of sitting in a recliner chair just scares most people. This has led to most people avoiding this visit. People will only visit a dentist when they have severe toothache because at that point they cannot avoid the dreaded visit. This is not advisable because extreme dental problems are not only more painful but also expensive to treat.


Myths are also another defense mechanism that people have developed to avoid going to the dentist. Some of the dental myths have been ingrained in our culture for very long and it is difficult to tell what is fact or fiction. False information about dental issues can be extremely dangerous. Some of the common dental myths are:


  1. Bleaching will weaken your teeth- everybody wants their teeth to be sparkling white. It is part of the essence of a beautiful smile. Most people believe that all you need is to regularly brush or floss them to attain that perfect color. Sometimes, this is not enough and you might need to use a bleaching product to whiten them. There are a variety of products available in the market for this purpose. However, there is a fear that bleaching products might be harmful and weaken your teeth in the process. This is not true because bleaching products are designed to affect the color and not the health or strength of your teeth.
  2. Bad Breath means that you do not brush your teeth well- we are always very quick to judge when someone has a foul breath coming from their mouth. We believe that poor dental hygiene is the cause of bad breath. This is true in some cases. However, the major culprit for bad breath is not poor hygiene but foods. The foods you eat play a major role in determining the kind of smell that comes from your mouth. Garlic and onions will give your mouth bad odor regardless of how much you brush your teeth or floss. Diseases can also be a cause of the foul smell.
  3. Stop brushing if your gums are bleeding- this seems logical on the surface. However, when dealing with your gums, this is far from the truth. In fact you should do the opposite.
